JANUARY 15, 2008
AUGUSTA, ME

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap accepted applications from 2,000 Maine motor vehicle owners and a check for $40,000 this afternoon from state Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess, R-Cumberland, to initiate the authorization of the Breast Cancer Awareness Specialty Registration Plate. Senator Dennis Damon, D-Hancock, Senate Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Transportation also participated in the presentation which took place in the Transportation Committee hearing room at the State Capitol.

Specialty registration plates are made available for motor vehicle owners who wish to support the causes that specialty plates represent. An additional $20 is paid by the registrant to obtain the plate, and $15 at each renewal, which is dedicated to the various representative causes. Current specialty plates include the Conservation, or loon plate, the Lobster plate, the University of Maine System and Black Bear plates, the Agriculture plate, and the Support Our Troops plate.

When Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess began the process, Maine law (Title 29-A MRSA section 468) stipulated that in order for the Legislature to consider authorizing new plate issuances, proponents must obtain names, signatures, and current registration numbers from 2,000 vehicle owners along with $40,000or twenty dollars per registrationin order to assure that there is a demonstrated interest and to defray start-up costs. The Legislature also approves the final design of new plates as well.

Rep. Strang Burgess submitted LD 775, An Act to Create a Special License Plate to Support Breast Cancer Support Services last year. Since the bill was first considered, she has been vigorously active in meeting the requirements of current law. Weve completed the big hurdle, she said, We are all very energized by this project, and are looking forward to this plate being available soon.

Senator Dennis Damon commended the effort. This law was established in order to protect the investment of Maine motorists in these plates, he said. We have a great many worthy causes that can benefit from specialty plates, and this is one I certainly support, but we only have so much capacity to produce new plates. I think the advocates for the Breast Cancer plate have done a marvelous job, and I dont doubt this proposal will be embraced by the committee.

The Committee on Transportation will now resume its work on the plate proposal. Once that work is complete, the Secretary of State will be responsible for the production and distribution of the plates for motorists desiring them. This has been an impressive effort by a lot of people, said Secretary of State Matt Dunlap. This type of effort requires a great commitment and tremendous organization, and the supporters of this effort have done a great job. I am happy to work with the committee to make sure the launch of this new plate is successful.

The organizations that stand to benefit from the proceeds of the plate include the Maine Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer Coalition, and the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program.

Recently we attended an education program at one of our distributors, Seagroatt Wholesale in Cromwell, CT with the fabulous J Schwanke one of J's sponsors, Eufloria Flowers.

We secretly conspired with J who was gracious enough to allow us a few minutes before his program to recognize the generosity of Seagroatt and Eufloria with plaques of appreciation from the Maine Cancer Foundation in front of more than 250 guests.

Seagroatt Wholesale and Eufloria Flowers (growers of the prettiest roses on the planet!) provided all the product for the Cure Breast Cancer for ME event last fall.

We are truly fortunate and honored to work with such fine suppliers. Thanks guys!

We are very pleased to be included in this poster series. The photograph was taken earlier this week and goes to print on Monday for distribution later this coming week. We've provided a sneak peek for our customers and friends. Special thanks to Chris Busby at The Bollard for coordinating the project with us.

Today we hosted volunteers to make corsages for the Breast Cancer Survivors attending the CURE Breast Cancer for ME Event being held at Marriott Sable Oaks on October 1, 2007. Our rose grower, Eufloria Flowers, donated beautiful pink roses to us to create these special tokens for the survivors.

Two volunteers, Debbie and Barbara, helped at the store on Saturday afternoon making the pink ribbons for each corsage and getting the roses ready for the corsage making operation Sunday.

On Sunday Erlene and Linda of Rosemont Floral we were joined by Jill, Karen and Jane.

This morning Weekend Today with Lester Holt and Amy Robach started a new series of reports, entitled "Tricks of the Trade". The first report was on the floral industry, this particular report was subtitled "What Your Florist Won't Tell You".

A wholesale florist gave consumers tips on looking for freshness in flowers, a floral designer presented ordering tips and Amy Robach and Vera Gibbons discussed ordering from a local florist verses using an online florist. Both agreed using a local florist gave consumers more for their money.

We thought on the whole the report was very informative for consumers, but we are a bit confused as to the subtitle of the report. Any reputable florist is willing to share the same information with their customers and to educate their customers on care and handling of the flowers after purchase.

In other words we WANT you to know, and we're happy to share information with you!

Informed consumers are happier customers and happier customers are what any business wants. Perhaps a better subtitle would have been "Here's What Your Local Florist Wants You to Know".

Near the end of the report Amy Robach asked Vera Gibbons if she had any tips for avoiding being ripped off at Valentine's. Vera Gibbons correctly stated that the increase in price at Valentine's Day is a result of supply and demand for product. Kudos to Vera for setting the record straight.

Perhaps Amy Robach would realize all that goes into a price increase at Valentine's Day if she spoke with a local florist before making such a short sighted statement. Reputable florists do not rip their customers off at Valentine's.

We would be happy to explain how much the price of everything going into a dozen roses increases, from the roses to the fillers and even labor. Most florists simply cannot fill the demand without a significant amount of overtime during Valentine's holiday.

In her book Flower Confidential, author Amy Stewart explains part of the increased cost of roses at Valentine's arises from empty planes being flown into rose producing regions to fly roses and other flowers back to fill the demand for fresh cut flowers during the Valentine's holiday.

We encourage you to build a relationship with your local florist, you'd be amazed at what you can learn and what we want you to know!

KICK OFF Touching Hearts Fundraising Partnership

PORTLAND ME., June 1 More than 150,000 troops serving overseas will spend this summer away from their families. With the help of Rosemont Floral and community members Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect funds to help keep troops connected with their families.

When individuals use Rosemont Floral for flower orders over $25.00, a contribution of $3.00 will be go directly towards Cell Phones for Soldiers. “Rosemont Floral is pleased to offer this fund raising partnership that benefits local charities, schools, churches and other non-profit groups in our local area or a cross the country. The Touching Hearts partnership offers new and existing customers the opportunity to use our services when sending flowers locally or out of town while helping Cell Phones for Soldiers at the same time”, said Erlene R. LeBorgne, Rosemont Floral Spokesperson.

“We’re proud to show our support for U.S. soldiers, and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers,” said LeBorgne.

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

“We have been overwhelmed by the generous support of thousands of Americans who have helped our troops speak with their loved ones,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “However the need for support keeps growing as more soldiers are sent to the Middle East or are asked to serve extended tours of duty.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones and prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis.

About Cell Phones for Soldiers:

Cell Phones for Soldiers was created by Brittany & Robbie Bergquist of Norwell MA.  After reading a story about a soldier who ran up a huge phone bill calling home from Iraq, these two teenagers decided to help out.  They started by opening an account with $21.00 of their own money.  They are collecting cash donations and old cell phones.  The cell phones are recycled for cash and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving in the Middle East.  Cell Phones For Soldiers is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Their efforts have motivated people and businesses around the country to donate to this worthy cause.  Their goal is to provide every US soldier with a way to call home for free.  For more information, please visit www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com

We are pleased to announce that we have become a drop off center for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. You can now bring your old cell phone and accessories into our store where they are collected and forwarded to a recycler.

Customers bringing cell phones to our store for recycling will receive a free flower as a token of our appreciation. In addition, we'd like to encourage our fellow florists and other businesses to become a drop off center for this program. To learn more about the program or becoming a drop off center visit the Cell Phones for Soldiers website.

From the Cell Phones for Soldiers site:
Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to turn old cell phones into more than 12 million minutes of prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas in 2007. To do so, Cell Phones for Soldiers expects to collect 15,000 cell phones each month through a network of more than 3,000 collection sites across the country.

T
he phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone - on average, each phone represents 60 minutes of talk time for our troops.

“Americans will replace an estimated 130 million cell phones this year,” says Mike Newman, vice president of ReCellular, “with the majority of phones either discarded or stuffed in a drawer.  Most people don’t realize that the small sacrifice of donating their unwanted phones can have a tremendous benefit for a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers.”

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 400,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

“Cell Phones for Soldiers started as a small way to show our family’s appreciation for the men and women who have sacrificed the day-to-day contact with their own families to serve in the U.S. armed forces,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “Over the past few years, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue to grow as more troops are sent overseas for longer assignments.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones with prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis.

Before bringing your cell phone to us you should be sure to remove the data with the Cell Phone Data Eraser.

Recently we were contacted by a customer with a special request for her cousin.

Dear Rosemont Floral,
I have what might be a pretty unusual question for you.

My cousin lives not far from your shop. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and has had chemotherapy for the last few months, and has just come home from surgery. She is in law school, and intends to graduate in May, on schedule! And she already had a position waiting for her at one of the area's biggest law firms.

She recently said that she wonders if her prospective employer thinks they got "a lemon" because of her illness. And the odd coincidence was, that I was just thinking the other day that if any 2 people on earth could get such terrible lemons in life (her cancer - she and her husband got married 2 months before she found the lump) and make lemonade anyway, it would be them. My cousin and her husband are the most incredible, loving, supportive, generous people.

So my long-winded question is this: is it possible to send her a small, potted lemon tree? Or if not that, then to add some small lemons to a floral arrangement? I live in in downeast Maine and am not able to get down to Portland very often but I'd like to do something a little more "personal" for her than the typical floral bouquets (although they certainly are beautiful!!). Your blog makes your lovely website so friendly and personal that I decided to contact you with my crazy question!

Thanks very much for any advice you might have,
Kim

Lemon trees were not available for Kim's cousin, however, we created a lovely arrangement of yellow lilies with other yellow and white flowers in a glass pitcher filled with lemons.

Well, thanks to the hard work of our staff it does!

We were contacted a little over a week ago to create something special for a credit union's 50th Anniversary Gala for built around a money tree.

A design was selected and the process of procuring large amounts of specific product on short notice began. The vases, river rock and submersible lights arrived on Monday afternoon. We received the cash to fold - yep, each bill was hand folded and individually attached to the tree! That process began Tuesday. The money tree form was assembled and given a lustrous gold finish.

The flame mini calla lilies traveled from Holland specially for this event, they arrived on Thursday. The process of creating the money trees was completed on Thursday and the centerpieces were completed on Friday. Corsages and boutonnieres for board members were created. In addition some arrangements for the cocktail area of the hotel were ordered. Submersible lights were added to the centerpieces on Saturday and we delivered everything to the hotel.

What a cool look - to walk into the ballroom and see lighted centerpieces adorning each table with a Money Tree atop was amazing. Kudos to everyone on staff for pulling a great project together at the last minute.

Need something unique for your next event? Give us a call, let us create something special for you!

Rep. Strang Burgess Extends Deadline to May 18th to

Register for License Plate for Breast Cancer Support Services

AUGUSTA – State Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess said today that she has extended until May 18th the deadline for Maine residents to sign up for a special license plate to aid breast cancer support services. She had originally set May 1st as the deadline to collect the 2,000 reservations required before Maine’s secretary of state will begin work on the plate.

“We’ve extended the deadline for 17 days, but that is the last chance to get the forms in before the end of this legislative session,” said Rep. Strang Burgess (R-Cumberland), who is a breast cancer survivor. “We need to get the 2,000 reservation forms in by then if we are going to get a pink plate ready for release in October 2008.”

The plate would be authorized under LD 775, sponsored by Rep. Strang Burgess and cosponsored by 66 other legislators. The bill is expected to pass easily but will not be brought up for a vote until the campaign can register at least 2,000 reservations for the plate. Along with reservation forms, individuals must submit a check for $20 to secure their plates when they become available.

“If we do not reach the 2,000 mark by May 18th, we will still collect forms on an ongoing basis until we reach 2,000,” she added. “We would then propose the bill for the second session of the 123rd Legislature next January, but that would delay the release of the plate by at least one year.”

The easiest way to sign up for one of the specialty plates is by visiting the web site www.mainecancer.org. The plates will cost $20 in addition to the regular motor vehicle registration fee, and annual renewals will cost an additional $15. With each new plate purchased, $10 will go to one of three funds established by groups that help Maine cancer patients. Another $10 will be donated for each subsequent plate renewal.

The three entities that would benefit from the program are the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition’s Support Services Fund, the Maine Cancer Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund, and the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program’s Mammogram Fund.

“The issue is of critical importance,” said Rep. Strang Burgess. “The money raised by this specialty plate will benefit early detection for under-served and uninsured Maine women, help patients who need financial assistance during treatment and recovery, and invest in research to eradicate breast cancer once and for all.”
