An effort is now underway in the Maine Legislature to obtain approval through the legislative process for a specialty PINK license plate that will benefit breast cancer services here in Maine.

 

 

Maine LD775 “An Act to Create a Special License Plate to Support Breast Cancer Services” has been introduced in the Maine State Legislature. This will serve as both a great fundraiser as well providing a wonderful reminder to all who see the plate of the need for early detection.

 

The proposed beneficiaries of this effort will be split equally three ways between the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition for their Support Service Fund (http://www.mainebreastcancer.org/); the Maine Cancer Foundation for their Woman’s Cancer Research Fund (http://www.mainecancer.org/); and the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program for their mammogram fund (www.maine.gov/dhhs/bohdcfh/bcp/index.htm).

 

This effort has received support and endorsement from the Breast Health Cooperative which includes these organizations plus the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Maine Affiliate.

 

There is a formal legislative process that must be followed to obtain approval of the specialty plate. The next step is to obtain reservations from 2,000 individuals along with a check for $20.00 which guarantees the individuals a plate when they become available.

 

It is hoped that the reservations can be committed to by May 1, 2007. If this time frame is met then the plate can be finalized within this current Legislative session. Based on the lead time necessary, the goal is to unveil the plate in October, 2008!
