All are welcome to attend this evening of great food and inspiring
conversation about the future of independent businesses in Portland. The
event will feature an unveiling of Portland Buy Local's new holiday poster
campaign and a discussion and book signing with Stacy Mitchell, local author
and co-founder of Portland Buy Local.

In her new book, Big-Box Swindle: The True Cost of Mega-Retailers and the
Fight for America's Independent Businesses (Beacon Press), Mitchell
highlights the more than 200 communities in Maine and across the U.S. that
have rejected big-box development projects since 2000, as well as the growing
number of effective "buy local" campaigns launched in communities as far-
flung as Raleigh, NC, and Bellingham, WA.  “Across the country,” Mitchell
writes, “people are coming to similar realizations about the value of locally
owned, independent businesses… as well as the high cost to communities and
local economies of the corporate retailers that have grown to dominate so
much of our landscape.”



Big-Box Swindle is receiving excellent reviews. Booklist noted, "From a
shrinking middle class to diminished culture and landscape, the effects of
the big-box retailers are far reaching, but Mitchell has uncovered a movement
to curb [their] proliferation and create policies that favor local
