Topsfield Boxford Newcomers & Natives create beautiful centerpieces at Nunans

I had the pleasure of hosting this lovely group of ladies from the Topsfield Boxford Newcomers. Some of them enjoy the group so much they stick around for years! Hence the addition of Natives to the name. The group is primarily a social group who get together and do fun things, they contacted Nunans and asked us to create a class for them. Searles Castle Floral Showcase

Today is the start of the second weekend of the Floral Showcase at Searles Castle. The opening weekend was a success for the Sisiers of Mercy and thier annual fundraiser. Business was brisk for the vendors and we are all looking forward to the next two weekends. The Designers have restocked thier rooms and they are ready for you to arrive.The Castle is beautiful and the show is a great way to get some shopping done before the real crazieness starts.

Choosing the Perfect Pumpkin

It is almost Halloween and you don’t want to be the only house on the street without a carved jack-o-lantern on your stoop! When choosing your pumpkin select one that has a flat base, so your finished pumpkin sits solidly. Remember, you can carve the pumpkin on any side so don’t get hung up about having the stem at the top. Stems can make great noses! Choose a gourd that is free from major blemishes, if the blemishes are small don’t worry, Halloween is in two days! The darker the skin of the pumpkin, the harder the skin will be to carve. For younger kids choose lighter color pumpkins, they will be easier for them to work with.

Christmas Floral Showcase at Searle’s Castle Windham NH

The Sisters of Mercy are hosting the 15^th annual Floral Showcase at the castle. Searles Castle is located at 21 Searles Road, Windham NH (603) 890-0458. Nunan Florist and Greenhouses will be decorating the Music Room and Sun porch on the first floor of the castle.

Join us for the opening weekend, this weekend, and get some of your Christmas shopping done early. 20% of sales are donated to the Castle Restoration Fund.

Nunan's will be decorating the music room.

I wanted to share some feedback from one of our recent brides.

"I wanted to send you a big thank you for beautiful flowers you and your staff created for our wedding. The flowers were gorgeous, whimsical and exceeded my expectations. The unity candle looked like you pulled it right off the beach, the centerpieces made the room feel elegant and comfortable, and the bouquets were amazing the colors matched each of the girl’s dresses perfectly and the shells were perfectly placed!! Help, I need some flowers!

Last minute order- Sheraton Ferncroft

Lobby arrangements for hotels are a favorite of retail florists (especially if they are standing orders). We have a local hotel that we enjoy working with that has been known to throw us a few curve balls. The hotel is a great account so we really try to please them.

We received a call on Wednesday evening that they would like an arrangement for the lobby table delivered on Thursday afternoon. It had to be beautiful because they had VIP’s coming in. We had a meeting to go over an interior plant proposal for them at 10:30 we could talk about the arrangement then. We met at 10:30 and left at 11:30. They received their arrangement at 3:00. How’s that for customer service? (see photos of the arrangements in the photo gallery)

The Ferncroft was happy, Nunans was happy and the VIP’s never knew that there was a “bustle in the hedgerow” about their arrival. That is customer service Nunans style. For more info about the hotel visit: www.sheratonferncroftresort.com

Photo contest

Now's the time to get out the camera, take your best shot and enter our annual photo contest. Submit a 5 x 7 or smaller color photograph (must include flowers) with your name, address, phone number and e-mail address on the back between August 1st and September 30th.

Why are flowers important for todays funeral services?

The phrase "in lieu of flowers" appears in the obituary columns every day in every major city. This phrase is troublesome for the friends of the deceased. Does it mean do not send flowers? Does it mean the family would prefer you money to the charity listed? Can you do both, neither? What should you do when you find yourself in this situation?

Floral tributes are an important part of the funeral service. Imagine a service where there were no flowers to soften and add comfort to the service, it would more difficult, wouldn't it? I have two stories of flowers I created for recent funerals and why they were very important to the family.

The first is about a grandfather who was a very patriotic man, he loved his country and served in the armed service. After his service he came home, married and had a family. He had one son who also served. His son had one child, a granddaughter. This young woman grew up and chose to serve her country. The grandfather felt a special bond with his granddaughter and they were very close. When the grandfather passed away his granddaughter requested leave to attend his funeral, that leave was denied. This was very upsetting to her and her father. The father came to Nunans to have a fitting tribute created. He wanted something patriotic, but not overdone. The family needed the granddaughter included in the service and her flowers where going to have to represent her in her absence. We created a tribute using a square wreath with a flag insert. The flowers were done in red, white blue and deep shades of pink (her favorite color). A script that read "grandpa" was attached.The flowers were made and delivered to the service. Two days later her father came in to say thank you. The piece was perfect, it was just what they wanted. Having the tribute made it easier for everyone to say goodbye, this floral tribute represented the legacy this man has left in the spirit of his granddaughter and her hope for the future.

The second story is about a man who was an athlete, he loved to play sports but, he especially loved baseball.He was an avid supporter of the town leagues, the Boston Red Sox and the local high school team. He was well along in years but he still went to every home game even though he was using a walker and often required help. His family came in with a baseball and wanted it included in an arrangement, they told me his story. I suggested we make a baseball out of flowers that would represent his love of the sport. They agreed and I made the tribute. At the funeral generations of baseball players from town attended the funeral. Fathers and sons who had played games for this man, they wanted to say goodbye but, they weren't sure if they should go, after all they didn't really know him except that he was at every home game they had played. When they got to the service and saw the baseball they knew they belonged there. The service was culminated in the pallbearers being players on the varsity baseball team.

When you hear stories like this, how can you question whether you should send flowers, of course you should. By the way both of these pieces were for the same man. To see the pictures visit our photo gallery on this blog.

Ask most people if they like candles, and most will say yes. The ones that say no are usually put off by heavy artificial scents that are often used in low quality candles. The buyers at Nunans have found a line of beautiful candles they are absolutely delightful. The scents are strong but, derived from botanicals and very pure. The line is called Votivo. The Jars are capped with a silver lid,tissue wrapped and placed in a black box. They make a wonderful gift any time of year. The next time you are looking for a gift consider the votivo candle.
