NEWS RELEASE. December 4, 2009
“We are here…….still.
You do not need to be told that these tough economic times are taking a toll in a lot of areas. Job losses, home foreclosures and retirement funds shrinking are just a few examples of the impact of the recession. Somewhat less obvious to the average person on the street is the demise of many small businesses in the area. You may have noticed a lot of empty spaces in the strip malls and in various buildings along US 1, as well as the shopping areas on Old Cutler Road. These spaces once housed small businesses and employed several employees who worked and spent money in the area. With the disappearance of what the financial experts call “discretionary money”, many consumers are stressed to simply meet their basic needs of food and shelter.
However, there are a slim number of businesses that are surviving these tough times and remain available to provide services and products that are essential in our daily lives. Cut-backs in manpower, limited selections and most importantly, reduced income for these business owners are actions taken to aid in remaining viable as a business.
One such business is your local florist, Blooming Gardens, at 20462 Old Cutler Road. Located in a building tucked away and barely visible from the street, this flower shop has been in the same location for over ten years. And, it seems as though most new customers come in with the standard comment that they never knew that there was a florist here. Well, there is and it has been operating in this area for nearly 16 years. While other floral businesses in the area have closed their doors, some after several decades in business, this small business has managed to keep operating through, in the most part, the perseverance and astute diligence of its co-owner and operator, Barbara Wilson and her dedicated and skilled staff of two part-time designers and one part-time driver.
Barbara has strived to work with the local agencies to become more visible, from various community councils and network groups, to the support of local public schools and their career days. Her donation of floral arrangements and gift certificates appear at luncheons and awards ceremonies throughout South Dade. The shops arrangements, many of which she creates personally, are of the freshest flowers and highest quality. Her dedication to providing the best possible service to her craft is obvious to anyone who has had the pleasure of receiving an arrangement from her shop or has spoken with her.
So, do not wait until you need flowers for a funeral service or, more happily, a wedding or a christening, to visit Blooming Gardens. Her shop is full of gifts, chocolates, and greeting cards among all the flowers and live plants for every occasion. Do not let Blooming Gardens become another casualty of the recession or it may not be there for you when you need it most.
We are here……still, but for how long?
Blooming Gardens is located at 20462 Old Cutler Road (behind Shell gas station) and is open six days a week to serve you. Barbara can be reached on the web at www.bloominggardens.net or by telephone 305.256.2772.
Blooming Gardens was recently invited to donate centerpieces for Wine on Harvest Moon. This annual event was held on, October 3, 2009 at The Deering Estate at Cutler.
This year the event was entitled "La Dolce Vita" and featured wines and food with an Italian theme. When asked to come up with an idea for the table pieces, the Blooming Gardens staff researched flowers and Italy and came up with an idea for flowers. Internet search showed fields of bright, beautiful sunflowers.... so that is what we designed for the event! Bowls of different greens, sunny yellow sunflowers and rustic curly willow gave the look and feel of the Tuscan countryside.
A bright, full moon, beautiful flowers, good food and fine wine made for an enjoyable evening at the "jewel of South Dade" our backyard on the bay. It's great to be supporter part of our South Dade community!
