You Know You're A Florist Baby When...

If you've been in the shop in the last couple of months, you've probably seen or heard the little one.  We and a couple friends shared experiences and came up with the list of ways to know you are (or were) a florist baby:

  • Your cradle says Rosa Prima on the side
  • Your diaper pail is a Procona
  • Your favorite toy is the ribbon rack
  • Your first rattle is made from an empty Tic-Tac box, a jumbo paperclip and anchor tape
  • An 18" taper candle is your light saber
  • you think everyone builds things out of hyacinth stakes
  • you think the box full are "oases" therefore, one of them is an "oase"
  • GI Joe uses paddle wire to zip between design benches.
  • You're 30 years old, and realize your desk is exactly where your playpen was

Finally, you know you're a florist parent when:

  • You've had to reassemble leaves like jigsaw puzzles to see if the little one swallowed any
  • poison control is on speed dial, and you've used it more than once

Thanks to Amy at Wildflowers Chicago, Patty at Santee Floral Designs, Renee at Memorial City Florist, and Ryan from Martin's and Strider SEO.

Thanks for the laughs and painful admissions.  My 2 daughters (who are 8 and 11) have been a part of the flower shop since they were babies.  They too think you can make anything out of a hyacinth stake, a piece of curly ribbon, some paper clips and a broken flower.  The "socks" that come on the spider mums are costume foder as well as the corrugated paper that surrounds roses - they are arm or leg bands if I am not mistaken. You can also tell they are growing up in the flower shop when they play "phone" and have a order pad and are asking questions to their imaginary customer - "how many want, these flowers come in many colors do you have a special color in mind, can I get your name, will you be paying by credit card today?"  But what a joy that we work in an industry that our children can be with us.

Thats fun stuff!

At the shop I work at we have all kinds of kids who are regulars...One being the owner's son who is 6, he insists he is a designer (I let him help me design).  We have another co-worker's nephew who comes by sometimes and if we are working on funeral work he will stir our drip buckets and pretend its soup.  But I like it most of all when customers feel o.k. with bringing their child in to the shop, we let them hang out with us in the back while mom shops!

I'm one of those florist babies - I remember my sister's first crib at the flower shop was the file drawer in my mom's desk!  The office help had to change diapers - so I had lots of surrogate moms!  Seems all of my childhood injuries happened there too - falling into the trash dumpster and being thown to the curb by one of the office girls who was taking me home for dinner at her home.  I had many a nap in the those large California cut flower boxes -those old cloth aisle runners made for great bedding!  Most of my creative art was done scuplting Oasis - well until my grandpa would let me use the hot wire styrofoam cutter.  Anyone remember making wood fiber flowers?
