Another Reason Why We Call the Recipient First
In a previous post, we discussed several reasons why we call all recipients before we deliver flowers. Basically, calling ahead allows us to be more efficient, and protects our drivers.
Sadly, today, there is a new reason to add to the list:
Robbers steal $60,000 from elderly woman's home
Police are searching for two robbers who posed as flower deliverymen to
get inside an 80-year-old woman's Lower East Side apartment, where they
stole $60,000 in savings, authorities said.
The bouquet-toting thieves persuaded the woman, who was home alone at
the time of the robbery on Nov. 3, to open the door by claiming the
flowers were from her husband.
"How can I not open the door? They have flowers, they say [my husband
sent] them to me, and, besides, they were young kids," Carmen Nieves
said Saturday as police released a photo of the suspects.
In our area, we have a lot of elderly recipients, many of whom are reluctant to open the door for unexpected visitors. The Bloomery employs two part time drivers, plus the owners and designers may make deliveries as needed. At the holidays, we employ several more temporary drivers (usually husbands, other relatives and close friends). At holiday times, a legitimate driver may not be immediately recognizable. Calling ahead, so the recipient knows to expect our driver, also protects your loved one.
