Another Reason Why We Call the Recipient First

In a previous post, we discussed several reasons why we call all recipients before we deliver flowers.  Basically, calling ahead allows us to be more efficient, and protects our drivers.

Sadly, today, there is a new reason to add to the list:

Robbers steal $60,000 from elderly woman's home

Police are searching for two robbers who posed as flower deliverymen to get inside an 80-year-old woman's Lower East Side apartment, where they stole $60,000 in savings, authorities said.

The bouquet-toting thieves persuaded the woman, who was home alone at the time of the robbery on Nov. 3, to open the door by claiming the flowers were from her husband.

"How can I not open the door? They have flowers, they say [my husband sent] them to me, and, besides, they were young kids," Carmen Nieves said Saturday as police released a photo of the suspects.

In our area, we have a lot of elderly recipients, many of whom are reluctant to open the door for unexpected visitors.  The Bloomery employs two part time drivers, plus the owners and designers may make deliveries as needed.  At the holidays, we employ several more temporary drivers (usually husbands, other relatives and close friends).  At holiday times, a legitimate driver may not be immediately recognizable.  Calling ahead, so the recipient knows to expect our driver, also protects your loved one.

This type of story - making people fearful of what should be delightful flower deliveries - disturbs us all.

We also occasionally have recipients at home tell our drivers to leave the flowers on the porch.

But on the flip side, we've had a few elderly recipients ask our drivers to help them with simple household chores as long as they're there. :)  Moving trash cans, retrieving the mail, and the like...

Calling ahead, unfortunately, may become a more common occurrence for us all. Goodness knows what chores may be lined up for the delivery guys. ;)

On the same flip side, being 6' 4", I've dusted my fair share of cobwebs from corners.  There's usually a cookie involved, so it's all good!

We also can be the "eyes & ears" watching over our wonderful seniors.  Living in a section of the city that is pretty heavily populated with seniors, our drivers are often asked to "help" with something when we deliver the flowers.

More importantly, we will report back to the family if we think something is not quite right when we get there.

On more than one ocassion, it has meant that our senior has gotten the medical help or attention that he or she needed.....or the food or energy assistance that they desperately needed.

Most florists we know will always go the extra mile!

That's part of why we do what we do!!
