The Bee Movie's Vanessa the Florist

Our family went to see Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie yesterday, in part because it received good buzz for being a family-friendly film (and there have been very, very few of those the last few months) and in part because the story featured a florist as a main character.

Vanessa Bloome (voice of Renee Zellweger) is a young, attractive flower shop owner in New York City who saves the life of sweet bee Barry. The film portrays this florist as kind, caring and optimistic. She has a dream of hoping to one day design floats for the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena.

She must be wildly successful in business to afford a Manhattan apartment overlooking Central Park, yet her judgement when it comes to men - specifically her tennis partner and boyfriend wanna-be Ken - is a bit suspect. ;)

Vanessa's personality and goals really do match thousands of real florists who aspire to help create the world's largest flower bouquets and arrangements each New Year's Day.  Many floral designers volunteer their personal time to assist in the parade float decorating, with a few elite designers being offered paid positions at the top professional companies like Fiesta FloatsFestival Artists, Phoenix Decorating and Charisma.

FTD has created Bee Movie bouquets, but sadly they aren't available through any local florists - not even a cute shop like Vanessa's - and are just being drop-shipped via FedEx and UPS.

Maybe FTD should have this year's Rose Parade Float drop-shipped from Miami instead of relying on the many real florist Vanessas who have so caringly designed their award-winning entries over the years.

A drop-shipped float--wouldn't that be something?  Maybe instead of florists, FedEx drivers will volunteer to decorate the float.

Isn't that something? Imagine FTD doing something that doesn't benefit us, the retail florist? Oh wait...that seems to be what they're in the business of doing, as of late. It isn't a coincidence that so many are leaving FTD right and left. We've been members for years, and our shop, after celebrating our 50th Anniversary, decided we no longer want to be affiliated with FTD and are working to do everything we can to get our credit cards cleared through an independent service and get our computer system away from Advantage. We've just finished our new website and will launch in a few days. Each little thing is another step forward. Long live the retail florist!
