Top Ten Tips for Ordering Valentine's Day Flowers

1.  Order early, especially if you want something unique or original. It gives your florist ample time to make sure they have your favorites in peak condition.

2.  Have Your Flowers Delivered Feb 12 or 13. You'll avoid the rush and let your Valentine have a whole work week to enjoy flowers in the office. (You may also make everyone else jealous.)

3. For roses, compare not only price but stem length and presentation. Most florists stock more than one stem length so if size matters, make sure to ask for roses that are 70 cm or taller. Also determine if the roses are professionally arranged and hand delivered or whether your valentine will have to assemble her own gift.

4. Look beyond the rose. Though the traditional Valentine's Day flower, there are many other great varieties - tulips, orchids, gerberas, lilies - that stir the heartstrings.

5. Personalize. Don't feel limited to what you see on the web. Nothing says 'thoughtful' or 'romantic' better than a personally selected assortment of flowers that reflect the taste of your sweetheart - so pick up the phone, call the florist that will deliver your flowers and arrange for a custom creation. (But remember to do it early!)

6. Think style.  Your flowers can be arranged in a variety of containers and in a myriad of styles.  Do you like showy and opulent flowers? Then select a classic vase of long stems with abundant accent flowers. Prefer contemporary? Then choose a sleek styling, perhaps in a square glass vase. Desire chic? Then pick a compact pave' design that delivers a colorful Wow.

7. Call a local florist and save the service charges and hidden fees.  Do you really want to spend an extra $10-25 for a middleman call center to forward your order to a local florist?

8. Get recommendations. If you don't know a good local shop, ask co-workers to name favorite florists. If you go online, always look for both a local address and phone number on florists' websites. On the phone, ask 'What is your address?' to ensure you haven't reached a middleman call center.

9.  Let your florist know if your sweetheart has a work day shorter than the normal 9 to 5. Consider upgrading to a guaranteed AM delivery or sending the flowers a day early to avoid disappointment.

10.  Guys like Valentine's Day flowers, too. Whether a simple vase of roses or a wild tropical arrangement, your local florist can help send him the perfect romantic message.
