Another National Floral Design Competition Finalist
We received great news this week upon learning that floral designer Nid Indravudh was chosen as one of the finalist in the annual design competition sponsored by Flowers& Magazine. Florists from the US and Canada were invited to submit photos based on a selected theme, with this year's being "Brides of the Future."
A panel of top floral artists culled through the hundreds of bouquet entries and selected the top ten, which will be published in the periodical later this summer. Then more than 40,000 readers will vote for their favorites, with the winning entry receiving a $1000 first prize.
Nid started out as a student at the The Southern California School of Floral Design and took first place accolades in last year's California State Floral Association's Student Design Competition. She is a native of Thailand and excels at contemporary floral art, with an emphasis on finely detailed elements and creations.
Over the years, Avante Gardens has been fortunate to have had a number of our team members received national awards including Flowers&'s 1991 winner Leslie Iwasa and 2004 top prize getter Marisa Perring; SAF Sylvia Cup finalist in 2003 and 2004 Denise Abergel, and my own win of that award in 1992. Our designers have also taken top prizes in numerous local, state and regional competitions.
Participating in design competitions fuels enthusiasm and allows floral artists to stretch their imaginations and technical skills. Live, on-site competitions, such as the Sylvia Cup, have an atmosphere similar to The Iron Chefs, where designers are armed only with their tools and challenged to spontaneously create original compositions with flowers, foliages and containers in a 'surprise package' format. A panel of judges then assess the compositions based on color, form, originality, adherence to rules and theme, and technical execution. It's amazing to see the large variety of styles created from the same materials and witness the difference a human hand can make in enhancing the visual 'wow' of flowers.
Since Flowers&'s photo competition is published without the designers' names, I'll wait until the voting ends to share Nid's well-crafted entry.
Congratulations, Nid!
