That Autumn Flower Feeling in Southern California
The calendar says that Fall started last week but the thermometer here in Anaheim still reads 90 degrees. For most florists across the US, the use of the season's finest Autumnal colors, textures and blossoms has been well underway for a month. Labor Day, the unofficial start of Fall, usually brings out the cattails, cornstalks, pumpkins, harvest-colored leaves and festive chrysanthemums.
But we florists in moderate climates like Southern California, Arizona, South Texas and Florida often joke that Fall officially begins the Monday of Thanksgiving week and lasts through Turkey Day, a whole four days! Oh, the days do grow shorter and get cooler, dropping to highs in the 80's, but the breezes through the palm trees have a way of dampening the feeling many former-Northerners used to get.
If you live in warm weather but miss that Fall feeling, yearn no more. Fortunately, California flower growers produce an amazing array of classic, exotic and unique flowers and foliages that encapsulate Autumn and they're available at local flower shops like ours right now.
For customers that prefer traditional or romantic textures and designs we recommend the vibrant cockscomb celocia, graceful montbretia (both in flowering and seed pod forms), dahlias, hypericum (coffee berry), and hydrangeas. They are in abundant supply, at best-of-year prices and in peak freshness.
With our shop's reputation for specializing in contemporary and tropical flowers and design styles, a non-traditional nod to Autumn can artfully be highlighted with kangaroo paw, cymbidium orchids, New Zealand flax, and pincuchion and safari sunset proteas.
One of the best things about Autumn in Anaheim is the now familiar trip of the Angels to post-seasonal MLB play. Tuesday night, October 4, the Angels will take on the New York Yankees here at Angel Stadium. Sadly, we don't have tickets to the game, but our flowers will be there since we've been fortunate to have designed the large fresh arrangements for the Diamond Club since 2000. Tuesday night's designs call for energetic and explosive reds and will include Hawaiian ginger, anthuriums and fresh orchids from Thailand.
Let's hope the Angels go all the way like they did in 2002. Go Angels!
