Mother's Day Flowers: Comparison Shopping

Readers of our blog know I've long urged shoppers to go local and buy direct when ordering flowers. You'll get the absolutely best gift delivery value dollar-for-dollar.

In case you still don't believe me, watch this consumer report from Washington DC's NBC4: Mother's Day Flowers. The reporter compared $50 in flowers from ProFlowers.com, 1-800-Flowers.com, FTD.com, OrganicBouquet.com and a local Washington DC Florist, Greenworks.

The bouquets were judged by shoppers at a local mall and by overwhelming majority, the Greenworks arrangement was chosen best. (As a quick aside, the company coming in dead last doesn't like it when people report about the shortfalls of their products. They recently sent a couple local florists a cease and desist for writing about their dealings with the company. The story of ProFlowers' reputation management can be found on FloristDetective.com.)

Similar comparison results were seen in a recent test made by NBC's Weekend Today: Tricks of the Trade - What Your Florist Won't Tell You. Two bouquets costing $50.00 - the one from the local florist on the left and the one through a 'national' online-only company on the right - say it all.

And the title of the piece is ironic since this is exactly the kind of information we local florists really want consumers to know.

It's not too late to send Mother's Day flowers and still get a great value. If your Mom lives in our Anaheim or Orange County delivery area, we hope you'll give us a call or order online.

If she lives out of our delivery area, I recommend using Google Maps. Type in your mom's address and click 'Search Nearby' on the pop-up balloon. Type 'florist' in the box and you'll get a list of local stores - many with user reviews, links to online ordering and business hours details. Then you can know what'll be delivered and save up to $20 in unneeded service charges from a national company.

But no matter how you order, don't forget Mom.

Consumer Alert: ProFlowers

In the past I have written about the dangers and the deception involved in sending boxed flowers through services such as FedEx. The dangers include extreme temperatures and not getting what was pictured. My blog post had shown an actual delivery and the condition of the flowers received. The individual who posted the video was sued by proflowers.com and forced to remove the video. I have also removed my link in the past blog to the video.

Just in time for Mother's day, Butera The Florist is scheduling " Evening with the Florist" open registration evenings. Evening with the Florist is our own in-store floral design event... It's fun, it's educational, it's entertaining...it's "Edutainment"!

In the design studio section of our store, Vince Butera AIFD, PFCI will take the audience on a floral design journey. He will demonstrate a variety of styles, discuss various products, show professional techniques...all while creating a number of fresh floral designs in front of you.

"Evening with the Florist" has previously only been scheduled for closed groups, The open registration evenings are scheduled for individuals or small groups. Current available dates are Thursday May 15 and Tuesday June 3. The show begins at 6:30pm.

Reservations are now being accepted with advance registrations... the fee is $55.00 per person. Light refreshments will be available, and you are welcome to also bring your own if you wish. Our cafe tables seat 4 each, and we have a maximum attendance of 16.

Featured Flower: Tulips

Featured Flowers: Tulips

Although usually associated with Holland, tulips originated in Persia, and are indigenous to Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey. Tulips are believed to have come to Europe in the 16th century. In almost no time at all, tulips became a very popular flower, especially in Holland and France. Even today, we refer to varieties of tulips as being "Dutch Tulips" or "French Tulips", despite their origins.

Unlike most flowers, tulips cannot be grown in a warm tropical climate, since they require a cold period to induce plant growth. Tulips are one of the few flowers whose stems continue to grow after they bloom. It is thought that in nature, the pointed blossom helps the flower push through any remaining snow, and the stem's elongation lifts the blossom above the snow and away from the parent bulb. Warmth and light seem to trigger this behavior. In modern arrangements of cut tulips, the stem's elongation gives rise to the charachteristc graceful gooseneck bends in vased arrangements.

Dutch tulips usually have a smaller bloom and a shorter stem, while French tulips have a considerably larger blossom and longer stem. Both varieties are available in an amazing assortment of colors. Another type of tulip popular in floral shops is the parrot tulip, whose petals have feathered or fringed edges.

Tulips are available pretty much throught the year, thanks to modern coldhouses and cultivation in the southern hemisphere. For field grown tulips in the northern hemisphere, the peak season is December through April. Thanks to their colors and availability, tulips are gaining more and more popularity at Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter. During "field season" in the US, most tulips are grown domestically or are imported from Holland. Tulips in the summer are usually imported from South Africa, Australia or New Zealand.

In nature, tulips prefer cool. To help your tulip arrangement last longer, keep it in a cool location, away from direct heat. Since tulips bend toward light, it's a good idea to rotate a tulip arrangement every day, or place them in a spot with even light. If you did not receive a packet of flower food with your arrangement, the water should be changed and the stems should be recut daily. Tulips are also sensitive to ethylene gas, which is given off by ripening fruit, so keep flowers and fruit away from one another.

Their flowers are available through your local florist (they do not sell direct to consumers), so when you find something you like, talk to your local florist to arrange the details.

Mother's Day 2008 Preview

This year, we're preparing something unique for Mother's Day. We've planted a series of premium hanging baskets and porch planters in our family's greenhouses. Every basket will feature a lush selection of white, pink and purple flowers. Plants include petunias, sweet potato vine, bacopa (bridal veil), Swedish Ivy and calibrachoa. These special planters and baskets will receive tender loving care over the next few weeks, and will be unlike any other in the Butler area. Awesome Blossoms Featured Designer

Awesome Blossoms is an online floral design magazine covering news and trends in flowers, florists and floral event decorating and is published quarterly by leading US floral wholesaler Mayesh.

I've had the honor and privilege to be selected as their featured designer for the newly released Spring 2008 issue. The article includes a lengthy interview and slide show of some of my favorite designs. It's a real treat to be included in the company of previous featured designers like David Tutera, Rene' van Rems and Els Teunissen.

Marisa Perring in 'Making it Big'

The Style Network has recently been airing the floral designer episode from Making It Big, a reality show where up-and-coming young professionals vie for opportunities to work with top members of their fields.

Shot two years ago, the segment included an Avante Gardens' design team member, Marisa Perring, as well as a former student of Phil's school of floral design, Corey Lonsert, AIFD. The third competitor, Jeremy Trentelman, lead designer at P J's Flowers in Phoenix, works for our good friend Tony Medlock, AIFD. Yes, it really is a small flower world. :)

A number of florists have called and written to ask Marisa about taping the challenge segment of the show so I talked her into writing a brief description and sharing her thoughts on the experience.

A chance to be on a reality TV show highlighting floral designers - finally, I had the opportunity to share with people what it takes to be in the floral industry….and that’s putting it lightly.

Being under pressure with the cameras, the questions, the re-takes, the time limit and the misinterpretations, that was a challenge in itself.

Of course, they didn’t explain much to the viewers about how little information we received in advance of the challenge. The only info the producers gave us (about the room to be decorated) was that it was a butter color with touches of gold…THAT’S IT.

Although we received a $500 budget for flowers, containers and accessories (wholesale of course), we designers know that to really show off our talent and to make an impressive display for a whole room, $500 isn’t a lot to work with. We had no idea how big this room was or how many containers we could use - we just got to know the styles. We didn’t know we were choosing the linens, the plates, the napkins etc... and they threw in our 2 assistants at the last minute. I also believe that they added that entry piece as well.

It was frustrating when the production crew told me not to bring my backpack onto set so when I was asked to show my sketches, I didn’t know where my bag was. At that point, I was getting a little irritated. With such little information, and of course for reality TV, throwing in so many more twists and what not, 2 hours was really pushing it. But did you noticed? I was the only one that completed my challenge with all the required elements.

And the tears…you can give me any challenge and I will never cry about it! To have the chance to be featured in Flowers& Magazine would make anybody cry tears of joy. (Since then, I have had the privilege to be a featured designer in the March 2008 issue.)

Having this being aired 2 years after it was taped, watching it now makes me realize how much I’ve matured. Patience is a big one for me and I’m finally learning to breathe and walk myself through it. I now accept things for what they are and I know that if I hadn’t come in 3rd place, I wouldn’t be where I’m at now.

Since then I have experienced so much that I now have a clearer vision of where I want to be in my career and I’ve learned to respect others opinions as well as respecting my own challenges, personally and professionally.

Marisa is a member of AIFD, winner of the national Flowers& Magazine competition, three-time People's Choice winner and two-time first runner-up at the California State Top Ten Floral Design Competition. She was selected from hundreds of applicants - from across the US and Canada - to participate in Making It Big.

Organic and Green Flowers

Anaheim just hosted Expo West, the nation's largest natural, organic, and healthy products trade show and we were please to be selected to provide floral designs for many of the exhibitors and events surrounding the show.

Here's just a small sampling of some of the specialized custom arrangements delivered to the convention center and neighboring hotels:

Wheat Grass Cubes

These darling 6" X 6" glass cubes filled with white rock and wheat grass were used in a booth to display a line of natural skin care products.

Wheat Grass and Green Arrangements

This arrangement was part of a set of designs created to be used in front of stage podiums. In addition to featuring wheat grass, each arrangement incorporated tropical foliages, green dendrobium orchids, and curly willow and was accented with large spheres of fresh moss.

Organic and Environmentally Friendly Flowers

Using organic tulips and Veriflora certified roses generously provided by Organic Style, we designed and delivered the centerpieces for the Organic Center's VIP Dinner. It was a pleasure to work with the fantastic flowers from this leading-edge company, especially the 'Limbo' (chartreuse) roses seen in the arrangement above.

Organic and green flowers certified by organizations like Veriflora and Florverde are gaining in popularity and we at Avante Gardens make it a point to choose growers that support eco-friendly farming and handling practices. It's good for us as flower handlers, good for customers and good for our world.

French Tulips!

The last couple weeks we've worked with the most spectacular French tulips I can ever remember. Though available year-round, Spring is truly French tulip season. With 24-30 inch tall, graceful stems and large blossoms, these elegant flowers are spectacular by themselves and can also be combined wonderfully with other premium blossoms and branches.

We're currently featuring a selection of French tulips in vases of 10, 20 and 30 on our website and the value is tres magnifique, starting at just $45.

Last weekend, we created a pair of designs featuring towering ivory French tulips, blue hydrangeas and willow in trumpet vases to grace the rectangular dining table for 14 for a special event. Each guest also received a leaf-wrapped and ribbon-tied French tulip favor.

French tulips have a much longer vase life than standard tulips and can last 7 to 10 days with proper care.

What better way to celebrate spring and the Easter holiday than with a glorious vase of these premium flowers?

Spring and Easter

Wedding Season is here!

The hot colors for 2008 are..........Chocolate brown (the new black) and of course, black!! (now paired with ivory) How do your pick flowers? The choices are many. Brown, on all it's many shades, from "light latte" to dark "espresso" can handle ornage, pink, green, light blue, lavender and of course whites and ivories......the choices and combinations are endless. What is your preferance??

Black is a neutral color -- anything looks great against black, except an extremely dark or receding color. (like dark blue, for instance). If dark colors are your favorite, then we suggest that you include a variety of shades to make the colors come together as a rich and bold offering.

Are many of you know, we are a wedding - heavy full-service flower shop. We love our brides and our weddings! We enjoy creating that special day for each and every bride that we are chosen to work with. You are all so special and dear to us!!

Now that the "season" has begun, our time on Saturdays for appointments is very limited. So that we are able to allow enough time to meet with you and properly address your concerns, please call IN ADVANCE to schedule time with us. Coming in from out of town? Not a problem. We will gladly meet with you on a Sunday or early Monday, if we need to.

Easter Flowers, Eggs, and many other things!

Well, here we are....the eve of St. Patrick's Day........The first day of Spring is in just 4 days......and the temperature today was a whole 38 degrees! Can you even believe that Easter is in just one week?? (Yes, the Easter Bunny will be hopping in early this year!).

We are stocked and ready to go with all your easter needs. Gorgeous flowering tulips, hyacinths and lilies come in this week. Fresh cut tulips, daffodils, iris and other wonderful spring blossoms are arriving daily. Our arrangements will range from the simple to the exotic.....go to our website for a complete selection. If you don't see something, just give a holler.....we can do it!

We will be open all week until 8 pm, closing on Saturday at 6 pm. We will be closed on Sunday, March 23rd, so that we as well as our many friends can attend church and enjoy a wonderful Easter brunch.

We of course will be doing our traditional Easter baskets -- a special treat that comes once a year. How To Pin On A Boutonniere

Heading to prom this year, but don't know how to pin on a boutonniere? No problem--we'll show you how! Click on a photo to see a larger version. And, if you're looking for corsage or boutonniere ideas, check out our prom corsage and boutonniere gallery.

Boutonnieres are always pinned to the left lapel of a man's jacket. As you stand looking a your date, this will be to your right. Most jackets have a small hole in the lapel where a flower would be placed in more formal days. For plainer designs or single flowers, you can still use the hole, provided it's cut. Here we'll show you how to pin on a boutonniere with fancier stem treatments.

Start by pinching the boutonniere between your finger and thumb. The flower stems should be parallel to the edge of the lapel.

Start the pin from the back of the lapel, through the fabric. When the pin emerges from the fabric, work it right into and through the flower stem. Then, work the pin back through the fabric of the lapel.

When we florists make a boutonniere with leaves and treatments, we often use a lot of wire, so you want the pin to be right near the base of the flower head to avoid the wire.

When you're done, you should not be able to see the pin when looking at the front.

From behind the lapel, you can see the two ends of the pin.

Northeast Floral Expo

Yesterday I attended the Northeast Flora Expo that is sponsored by the Connecticut Floral Association. I find events like this to be a good source on continuing education and networking. Helps with my professional growth and enables me to share what I learned with my staff and ultimately create a better experience for our customers.
      I was able to talk face to face with some key fresh flowers and hard goods vendors. Spoke to a company about improving our branding. Purchase some new and different containers whose image with plant and or flowers will be added to my web site soon to give us some new more unique items. Had a nice visit with the team that sells and supports our in house computer system. I was pleased to find that more improvements are on the way for our software. In fact I will be beta testing the new version latter in the month that ultimately will be used in thousands of other florist shops.
    Had a discussion with the representative for Chrysal USA the vendor that supplies us with products for the complete nutrition of our fresh cut flowers. As a result I will be fine tuning our extensive care and handling system of fresh flowers. Here at Central Square florist we spend thousand of dollars annually on products that will extend the life and quality of our fresh flowers.

Flowers for Surprise Weddings

Want to get married surrounded by friends and family without all the pre-wedding craziness that usually surrounds traditional ceremonies? Then consider a surprise wedding.

We had back-to-back weekends with surprise weddings this month and for couples who want a simple, fun and more stress-free event, they're a great choice.

The first couple invited guests to a Chinese New Years Party at the bride's home.

The residence was festooned with flowers, linens and decor in red and gold with arrangements strategic placed in the buffet areas and in the space later to be used for the ceremony. The couple wanted to be married in front of the fireplace hearth, but didn't like the thought of having the large plasma TV above it in the background.

Solution? The bride created a red fringed banner featuring the Chinese good luck symbol and hung it to cover the screen. Two recessed areas were filled with up-lit vases of bamboo, orchids, anthuriums, tropical leaves and hand-woven golden birds to create a simple yet stunning setting.

Table centerpieces were created in wok-style dishes and featured ginger, orchids, anthuriums, bamboo and gold-highlighted lotus pods.

Near the end of the cocktail hour, the groom gathered their guests in front of the fire place setting and announced, "We're getting married." Greeted with smiles and polite applause, he finished, "Right now!" and the room erupted with loud clapping. The bride, carrying a petite clutch of green cymbidium orchids accented with a gold fan, and her two granddaughter flower girls appeared and the ceremony took place to the delight of all.

Our second surprise wedding took on a more classic look and was held at the Los Coyotes Country Club. The event was originally scheduled to be an engagement party with a small group of approximately 50 friends and family members. Just 9 days before the event, the couple decided the night would be the perfect time to get married. Bride and groom tipped off their kids in advance of the event, but the other guests arrived to be surprised with the good news.

The bride carried a petite cascading clutch of 'Casa Blanca' lilies, 'Message' roses and dendrobium orchids wrapped in ivory satin and pale gold ribbons. For centerpieces, the couple chose low, causally elegant designs featuring 'Friendship' roses, raspberry lilies, dendrobium orchids and berries and we added a light dusting of rose petals to accent the ivory linens and creamy gold chair cover sashes.

The ceremony area, facing the golf course, featured two tall designs of garden flowers in white, cream, raspberry and crimson.

For both weddings, the brides mentioned that the only gifts they really wanted were to have the people they cared most about be in attendance as they married the men of their dreams. No doubt, these two marriage ceremonies will be unforgettable to their guests. They are to us.

We wish both couples a lifetime of health and happiness and are thankful they chose Avante Gardens to add to the beauty of their special days.
