Google Business Photos Visits Our Flower Shop

I was working from home on Wednesday and received a call from the shop telling me a photographer from Google had stopped in and wanted to shoot our store. Even though I was aware Google had a newish program regarding Business Photos for Place Pages, (having read about it on Mike Blumenthal's excellent blog) we never applied to participate - and my initial reaction was one of skepticism. Too many less-than-honest companies have been using Google's name to market their small business services for us to just accept these kinds of offers at face value.

Thursday morning, Kim - the photographer - again visited our shop and she was wearing a shirt with the Google logo. She noted the 'We're A Google Favorite Place' decal on our front door and smiled. Sure enough, Kim is part of a team working here in Orange County and they're attempting to capture the in-store flavor of local businesses.

We received a document describing the program and set an appointment time for her to return Friday afternoon to take the pictures. Gotta say that having at least a day to 'fluff up' the shop a bit gave us the comfort level cushion to say 'yes'. Am guessing other business owners likely feel the same way.

Since I closely follow the happenings in Local Search (and have been delighted to participate in David Mihm's Local Search Ranking Factors survey the last couple years), I was curious how the other businesses in our neighborhood were responding to this offer. As with many other opportunities on the web, it sounds as if the owners who use the internet infrequently don't quite understand how search engines and search marketing on the desk-top and mobile web are impacting their businesses - positively and/or negatively.

Kim is precisely the kind of representative Google should have on the street visiting local businesses. She's well-spoken, thorough, approachable and easy mannered. Her confident, professional demeanor has no-doubt lead more owners to say 'yes'.

I asked if we could take a photo of her taking photos. She got clearance 'from above' (Mountain View ;) ) so here's a shot of her with the still camera capturing an image of our tropical flowers.

A couple key points:

- Kim (and I presume other photographers) have a pre-set list of businesses to contact. Companies in our neighborhood not appearing on the list could only apply for a future opportunity.
- The photographers are using two different types of cameras and both are described in the FAQ.
- The sessions takes about an hour.
- Businesses who agree to participate can delete the images from our Place Pages if we don't like them.
- There's currently no time-line stated as to when the photos will appear on our Place Page.
- Software will automatically blur faces, but customers still need to grant permission to be included in the photos.

We're looking forward to seeing which shots make our page. It hasn't been updated much by us since late '08 and early '09 when our listing completely disappeared for 3 months. Updating info can have unintended consequences - just ask Matt McGee - and we don't want to go through that again.

I'm also curious what other uses these photos might have in the future - alluded to in the FAQ:

24. Will Google be using the business photos in other applications besides Place Pages?

Google is committed to continually innovating, and we're always looking for new ways to make business information more useful and accessible to our users. In doing so, we may create new applications that use the business photos we take at your premises. Your consent to allow Google's photographers to take business photos will also be used for these applications.

Click on a product display area and then be offered items in the category for purchase via Google Shopping? Image search for business so users can quickly compare storefronts, interiors and customary inventory? Any other ideas?

Summer Wedding Season in Milwaukee WI

Summer Weddings are the most popular time to get married. June, July and August house the most weddings through out the course of the 12 months. June, used to be the most popular month to get married in but June weddings aren't as numerous as they used to be. Hosting a rehearsal dinner? Try creating a tropical paradise. Simply add just a few stems of dendrobium orchids in a cylinder vase. For a statement arrangement: place stems of bright colored and unusual heliconia or anthurium with one or two large beautifully patterned leaves like banana or monstera to create a stunning display. Pour a bit of sand and a few shells at the base of your design and you are all set for the steel drums!

You can easily create a Moroccan theme on your table by scattering multicolored silk scarves across your table and adding in an arrangement of Mokara orchids. Try grouping velvety red roses, purple lisianthus and orange carnations in low bowls to add the feel of bowls of treasure and spice. The rich bold colors and textures lend themselves to a feeling of opulence. Dim the lights and place about a dozen or so candles on the table and you have a setting that would be fit for the Prince of Persia.

Another fun party could be themed around the different seasons! You can accent one room with an arrangement consisting of tulips, green grass and daisies for spring. Lay out several pairs of sunglasses and have guests wear them as they look at arrangements made of sunflowers. In another room, scatter artificial fall leaves on a table and group different sized pumpkins around vases of orange roses. Feature winter in room with vases of all white flowers like larkspur or stock, nestled these vases in mounds of rock salt…..it looks just like crushed ice….but no mess. Place white branches in French flower pails and you could provide mittens for the guests in this room.

Whatever your theme……Nunans florist will be to come up with a creative suggestion to make your party memorable.

Recently we helped a bride plan a surprise wedding. The groom knew he was getting married and to be dressed and ready for 12:00 on Friday. The bride called Nunans and set up a consultation to arrange the details. The day of the wedding we delivered the flowers to a local Bed and Breakfast. The groom came down from his room, the bride came down from hers, they got in the limo picked up the Justice of the peace and drove to the state park to exchange vows. It was very sweet! New trend? Fresh Flowers in your hair!

The last 3 weddings I booked share a common thread.... the girls wanted fresh flowers in their hair. One chose a circlet of fresh flowers on a comb with white daisies and ribbons cascading down her back. Her wedding is taking place in an apple orchard surrounded by wildflowers and heritage apple trees. The second bride is having us wire and tape individual blossoms of stephanotis that will have a small bead in the center. The bead is the same one that will be used in the necklaces that will be the bridesmaids gifts. The third is having us make a large composite lily that will be placed at the back of her head to accent the detail of her dress. Three girls all very different but they all wanted fresh flowers for their wedding day.

Vince Butera AIFD, PFCI to present "Floral Design Program" on Swan's Island Maine

Vince will present a floral design program on July 27 to benefit the Swan's Island Library.

The program "The Art of Floral Arrangement...Influences, Trends, Inspirations" will begin at 7pm, and feature today's trends in floral design.

The program is part of the library's summer lecture series and is in cooperation with the Swan's Island Garden Club. two years ago, the old library burned to the ground leaving only ashes and a stone foundation. The new building is slated to begin construction soon. Money raised from this event will benefit the library's gardening book section.

A $5 donation is requested at the door, and the floral designs will be auctioned after the presentation.

Some of the fresh floral product will be from Swan's Islands gardens...making the program very improvisational!

Secretaries Day? Administrative Professionals Week? Who gets gifts?

Things used to be so easy, They told us it was a holiday we thought about it for a little while and sent a gift or card that was appropriate. The waters are a little muddier when it comes to the week of April 19, 2010 : Secretaries Day? Administrative Professionals Week? Who has a secretary anymore? The terms in use today are "Administrative Professionals" and "Executive Admins". They are broader terms, that encompass more flexibility than the original "Secretary" role. If your company is more informal the person you need to thank is the one who keeps the office running and keeps everyone in the right place at the right time.

National Secretaries Week was created in 1952 to encourage more people to consider careers in the secretarial/administrative support field.

Administrative Professionals Day gifts are by far the most common way of giving recognition to these most important people on your staff. What is the top gift?..... Giving flowers. Maybe, before you forget, you should order some flowers now!

In 1955, the observance date of National Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April. The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981, and became Administrative Professionals Week in 2000 to encompass the expanding responsibilities and wide-ranging job titles of administrative staff.

Battle of the Flower Designers: Championship Round

We've made our way up through the March Madness Battle of the Flower Designers brackets and are now in the Championship Round! Videos have been uploaded both from our Anaheim flower shop:

Each finalist was allowed to present a 'designer's choice' arrangement and we used the Glee cast's version of 'Defying Gravity' as the inspiration for our finale entry. (Can you tell how much we love Glee since we used music from the show in each of our videos?)

The arrangement features gorgeous pastel tropical flowers from Green Point Nurseries including upright and hanging heliconias, ginger, king proteas, anthuriums and monstera, ti and areca palm leaves. My favorite accent materials were the epidendron orchids cut right from our garden.

The prop to hang our suspended design is truly vintage since my husband Phil had it custom built in 1978 when he competed in the Atlanta Invitational Competition. (I think that makes the prop older than Adam from Belvedere. Ha!)

The entire design, more than 5 feet in overall height and 3 1/2 feet in width, is constructed in an Oasis CORSO Holder (a 1/2 block of caged floral foam) so the large stems and sheer volume of flowers presented a real challenge. And then there was the weight balancing issue to further push the limits.

It was fun to include my family at the end of the video. They inspire me to do my very best every day and I am truly blessed in so many ways.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank the 'families' from both the flower shop and the floral design school who truly contribute to our success every day. So here's a big thanks to Gordon (camera-man extraordinaire), Judi, Nid, Manny, Mary, Phan and Darlynn for all you do. Your commitment to delivering 'Wow' shows in everything you touch.

This competition has been great fun and we're delighted to have been able to showcase part of our design thought processes - and to share our passion for unique floral designs.

Does Byfield MA have a florist?

When someone orders flowers online they are presented with many choices of providers.What the consumer does not know is that many of these providors are not in the business of actually delivering flowers. So if you Goggle “florist in Byfield” you will get several hits, some are even on the map, as of March 2010 there are no florists located in the village of Byfield MA. What do you do if you want flowers delivered in Byfield but you are in Albuquerque? Look for a local florist in a neighboring town, check for a local number and a street address. You can visit their website and check their reviews. Do not use one of the order/gatherer sites these companies take your order then charge an additional service fee before forwarding your order to a real local florist to fill. Many of these order-gatherers use deceptive advertising tricks, making the customer think that they are dealing with a brick and mortar florist. Why do they do this? They want you to think they are a actual florist in the town you want flowers delivered to. They take their profit and just send the order along to a “real florist” at reduced value both to the florist and the customer.

They also do this in the ”Yellow Page” ads, many of the big ads are for businesses with no local store front, they are just gathering your order (for a fee) and passing it on to a real local florist. That florist is expected to absorb the delivery charges and often a 20% cut to the order gatherer.
